SF Symphony Letter

Dear Parents and Students –
Thank you so much for participating in our music programs.  By promoting academic achievement and improving student performance, participation in band helps the individual, the family, the school and, ultimately, society in general.  For the last 8 years we have traveled to San Francisco to see the San Francisco Symphony perform at Davies Symphony Hall.  I am excited to say that we will once again provide this opportunity to our Honor Band students on Friday, February 22nd 2013.  We will travel to the spectacular Davies Symphony Hall to see a special concert by the Symphony that will feature a teenage flute soloist on one of the pieces.  After the concert, we will stop at McInnis Park in San Rafael to eat our bag lunches and return to school in time for dismissal.  This is an excellent opportunity for your child to experience a concert by an amazing ensemble in one of the best venues in the world.
As you may know, schools are no longer allowed to charge fees for field trips, but they may ask for donations. In the past, the WMS Band program has never excluded any student from a field trip who was unable to pay a fee and we will continue to make sure that no student is excluded from a field trip who is unable to make a donation.  For this field trip, the ticket cost is $5 per student and the transportation cost is $10 per student for a total cost of $15 per student.  I therefore respectfully ask for a $15 donation per student to cover the cost of this field trip.  Please know that the WMS Band program is committed to taking this trip and that your donation will be applied to the expenses of this field trip.  Attached is a permission slip for the trip.   If you are able to make a donation, I sincerely thank you.  Whether or not we receive enough donations will determine whether or not we can take a trip next year.
Please also realize that all of our funding for instruments, repairs, supplies, music and co curricular activities comes from fundraising activities, grants and donations from our many generous friends and families.
We are happy to offer this outstanding educational programming for your child and hope that all who are able will donate so that we can continue to provide great experiences for kids.  Thank you very much for your continued support and for encouraging your children to be part of our musical community.  I truly appreciate it!
Sincerely

Steve Mitchell
