You did an amazing job! We received strong scores in Blend, Balance, Rhythm, Presentation, Precision and Musical Selection!! Our behavior and comportment on stage and off was above reproach. Diana Gilbert wrote a great article in the Press Democrat about the Festival and our participation. Many thanks to all of the parents, siblings, families and friends who helped get us there. We're especially grateful to Joella Olsen for helping to put together the carpools. Here is the text of the letter that went out last week regarding the Festival and transportation:

10/13/11
Dear Parents and Students
Many thanks to everyone for an outstanding start to the 2011/2012 school year for the WMS Bands! The students and I are very excited about our upcoming participation in the Analy Fall Festival at Analy High School in Sebastopol. As you may remember from the syllabus, and Back to School Night, the Analy Fall Festival takes place on Friday, October 21st. The schedule for our portion of the event is as follows:
4:30 Warm Up
5:00 Performance
5:30 Clinic
6:00 Photo
Unfortunately, the only bus transportation that we could arrange will leave at 1:00 in the afternoon. This would bring us to Sebastopol far earlier than we need to be there. The Festival does not even begin until 3:00 p.m. With that in mind, we are hopeful that there may be parents available who could drive to Analy after school on Friday and others who might be able to join us to help manage students in Sebastopol before the event begins. Thanks, in advance, for your continued support of the music program at WMS!
Sincerely
Steve Mitchell
__________________________________________________________

________________________
Student's Name
_______, I can provide transportation for my child.
______ , I have been fingerprinted and can provide transportation for ________ additional students.
______, I can serve as a chaperone in Sebastopol.

WMS Band Students Shine at Caz!!!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3URmQxH4vYM/TopFuNwZ95I/AAAAAAAAAGo/5Ll6BROu8JA/s320/IMG_2671.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5659412542013437842" />
Hi Everyone -- Diana Gilbert wrote a great article in the Press Democrat about our recent trip to the Cazadero Performing Arts Camp. We had a fabulous time even though the threat of rain made us have a serious change of plans for Saturday night sleeping arrangements. Musicians are adept at improvising and reacting quickly to a rapidly changing environment though, so it was no problem at all. The concert on Sunday was a truly festive and inspiring event. Music enriches our lives in many ways, and the work that we do together enriches the overall climate and culture of Windsor Middle School. Consequently, we have a responsibility to our selves and to our school to live up to our potential and to create the best bands that we possibly can! I know that the students in this year’s bands are capable of great things. I truly believe that we can create some of the best music ever produced at Windsor Middle School, and I look forward to working together, having fun, learning many things and taking advantage of your abundant talent. This document should provide all of the information that you will need to have a rewarding and fantastic year!
Attitude
Attitude is the most important thing in life, and certainly the most important thing in our bands. Attitudes are contagious: bad attitudes tend to spread to others and can ruin a group and the experience for every member. Similarly, good attitudes can sweep through a group creating a feeling of connectedness and loyalty that can make good groups great. As Charles Swindoll said, “The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company...a church (a band)... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude..I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you...we are in charge of our attitudes.” Your attitude and your behavior account for 1/2 of your grade in this course. Please be here because you want to be here to participate in all of the fun things that we will do this year. Students who develop an unacceptable attitude that affects other members of the group will be removed.
Community
Band classes are different from other classes. In Band, we learn by working together to create something that none of us could create on our own. Every person in the group affects every other person to a much greater extent than in other types of classes. Each person’s behavior and performance directly influences both the quality of the music that we produce together, and the amount that we can learn. Because we perform in public and represent Windsor Middle School, the quality of our work reflects the quality of our WMS community. Each person in the group has a responsibility to every other person, and to the school at large, to do their best, in class and in performance. It is critical that we work together to create the best possible experience for ourselves, and an outstanding impression on the community.
Behavior
Behavior in instrumental music classes presents a unique challenge for both students and teachers. Think of it this way: the goal of our class is to create sound - beautiful, artistic sound hopefully. We have large classes full of students who have instruments that can make a great deal of noise. Because our classes are “electives”, students are more likely to be in groups with their friends. (This is good, because we are creating a community, as noted above.) The challenge is to enjoy the company of our friends and to create an environment that allows everyone to learn. It is imperative that students have outstanding behavior in the classroom and in public performances. A list of Band Room Rules was sent home with a section to be signed by both the student and the parent. Please consult the “Rules” sheet for specific rules and consequences. Parents can help but supporting our efforts to maintain high standards for behavior and performance. Students who develop an unacceptable pattern of behavior that affects other members of the group will be removed.
Calendar
Here are a list of the dates that we have on the calendar for the 2011/2012 school year:
Winter Concert 12/15/11
Windsor Day Parade 5/5/11 (tentative)
Spring Concert 5/22/11

It is my hope that with this advance notice you will be able to keep these dates in mind as you plan your other activities. The Winter and Spring Concerts are considered part of the student’s grade. Unexcused absences to the Concerts will cause a student’s final grade to be reduced by one letter grade. Failure to attend the Windsor Parade will result in a 250 pt. fine, but extra credit work will be available for any student who is uanable to attend.

Performance Attire
We ask that students wear black long pants, or skirts a white shirt or blouse that will be tucked in, and black shoes.
Grading
Fifty percent of a student’s grade will be based on behavior and participation in class and fifty percent of their grade is based on work they do outside of class. Assignments for homework include documented practice time on their instrument, written reports on composers and performers, written music theory assignments, musical or concert reviews, directed composition projects, music careers research projects, or solo and small ensemble performance projects . There are points available for playing in EC ensembles, serving as a Band Officer or other service to the “musical community”. There are 900 points per term available for behavior and participation in class and 900 points available for work that is done outside of class. Final grades are calculated as an average of the two scores described above. Students who earn less than 540 points in the “homework” category, can still get a “C” if they have outstanding classroom behavior and participation. Students who earn more than 900 points in the “homework” category will not be able to subsidize poor scores in the “behavior and participation” category. Student scores are posted by “code name” in the room, so students will know how they are doing at all times. The homework portion of the course is “self-directed” in the sense that students choose which assignments they would like to do and when they would like to turn them in. This gives students the freedom to plan their homework around their individual schedules, but adds the responsibility of making sure that they have the points that they need for the grade that they want to earn by the time the term ends.
Grading for Windsor Middle School Bands
Daily points available per quarter: 900
Daily points available per day: 20
Other points available per quarter: 900
Your grade will be based on the “Average” of your “Daily points” and Your “Other Points”

810 - 900 = A
720 - 809 = B
630 - 719 = C
540 - 629 = D
below 540 ---- does not earn a passing grade

Ways to earn points:
• Practice – 1 hour – 100 points.
• Playing tests – 50 – 100 points depending on difficulty.
• Research papers on Composers or Performers – 100 – 250 points depending on quality
• Performance Review – 50 – 250 points depending on quality
• Composition projects – 50 – 250 points depending on quality
• Music Theory worksheets - 50 points per sheet (4 available per term)
• Music Careers research projects - 50 – 250 points depending on quality
• Band Officer – 500 points (President, Librarian, Treasurer, Sound Tech)
• Jazz Band or EC ensembles – 50 points per session – 250 pts. per performance
• Fill an Instrument vacancy (low brass/low winds) – 500 – 750 points
(The points awarded for filling instrument vacancies will be negotiable.
We clearly have a need for some instruments more than others.)

If you have less than “540 points” in the “Total Other” Category on the last day when the grading period is over, 539 points is added to your “Total Other” score. This will bring your average up. If you have more than “900 points” in the “Total Other” Category, your “average” is calculated based on 900 points and not your actual total. This keeps well behaved students who have not done enough work outside of class from failing, and poorly behaved students who get a large number of “Other” points from automatically earning a good grade.
Instrument Selection
It is very important that beginning students select the correct instrument when they are starting out. A student is much more likely to be successful and reap the benefits of studying music, if they choose an instrument that they are well suited for. Each person’s body and face is different and most people will find that they have an easier time with some instruments than with others. Many students already have an idea of what instrument they would like to play, or the student’s family has an instrument that they can use. Please keep an open mind about instrument selection. Our goal is to have everyone be successful in their efforts to play an instrument. The students in the Beginning classes will soon be trying out the different instruments mouthpieces to see which instruments will suit them. A letter will be coming home soon letting you know how your child did on the instrument tryouts.

WMS Instruments
We are fortunate to have a very limited number of schools instruments that we will be able to loan to students for the year. WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PROVIDE EVERY BEGINNING STUDENT WITH AN INSTRUMENT. We are happy to loan the WMS instruments that we have for the year, and ask that families pay a $50 instrument maintenance fee so that we can insure that all WMS instruments remain in good working condition. Preference for WMS instruments will be given to families that have a financial need to borrow one from the school. All other WMS instruments will be distributed by lottery. “Music for Schools” also has instruments to loan to those families that are unable to rent an instrument. Once again, preference is given to those families with a financial need. I have applications available for those interested in pursuing this option. Rental instruments are available from several shops in the area including Stanroy Music Center and Santa Rosa Music Center in Santa Rosa.

Percussion
Students wishing to play percussion instruments will be able to apply and audition for one of our percussion positions after our Winter Concert. Our percussionists must be among the finest musicians in our group. Not only do they need outstanding music reading and rhythm skills, they need to be proficient in reading both treble and bass clefs. They also must have outstanding classroom behavior, a strong work ethic and outstanding musicianship. For these reasons, we wait until half way through the year to determine which students will be selected to play percussion. A student who really wants to play percussion will have to demonstrate that they can play all of the material that we are playing on their first instrument. Parents who would like to help their child become a percussionist can help by making sure their child is successful on their first instrument.
Practice
Beginning students will have the best success if they adhere to a regular practice schedule to develop the skills that are taught in class. 1 hour of practice time per week will give a student the 900 points required for an “A” in the “homework” portion of our grading system. Students are always welcome to practice more than that, and they may need to at the beginning. Students who do not practice outside of class will have a much harder time being successful in class and will be much more likely to want to quit. 10 - 20 minutes of practice 5 days a week will really help a student to pick up the skills that they need to be successful. Parents can help by providing a quiet space and time for students to practice. Listening to your child and providing a few words of encouragement can really help!

Thanks again for encouraging your child to play music and thank you for supporting music at Windsor Middle School! I am looking forward to once again achieving our primary goal: to have as much fun as possible, and to reap the many benefits of music education by creating outstanding performing ensembles! This document should provide all of the information that you will need to have a rewarding and fantastic year!
What is Honor Band?
Honor is defined as “high respect, as that shown for special merit; esteem.” We are happy that WMS can offer two sections of “Honor Band” this year. The Honor Band is a specially selected group of 2nd and 3d year players. Each group was carefully chosen to blend ability and instrumentation. A great deal of effort was put into this process which will allow students to play in high quality groups while still taking advantage of the many other outstanding programs and course offerings at our school. It is an honor for me to have you as students. I know that you will honor me with your outstanding attitude, behavior and effort!
The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude...I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you...we are in charge of our attitudes.” Your attitude and your behavior account for 1/2 of your grade in this course. Please be here because you want to be here and participate in all of the fun things that we will do this year. Students who develop an unacceptable attitudes or behaviors will be removed.
You are a member of our team, and every other member of the team is relying on you to be there and to do your best every time we are together.
Please see the “Rules” sheet for specific rules and consequences. Parents can help by supporting our efforts to maintain high standards for behavior and performance.

Calendar
Here are the important dates for 2011/2012:

Sonoma Jump Start 9/23 - 9/25/11

Analy Fall Festival 10/21 or 10/22/11

SF Symphony Trip TBA

Winter Concert 12/15/10

SCMS Honor Band 1/21 - 1/22/10

Discovery Kingdom Trip TBA

Spring Concert 5/22/11

It is my hope that with this advance notice you will be able to keep these dates in mind as you plan your other activities. The Winter and Spring Concerts and the Fall Festival are considered part of the student’s grade. Unexcused absences to the Concerts will cause a student’s final grade to be reduced by one letter grade. Failure to attend the Fall Festival will result in a 250 pt. fine. Bonus points will be awarded for attendance at our important cocurricular events that take place outside of school hours. It is important to remember that our ensembles are communities in which every person contributes to the work that we produce together.
Performance Attire
We ask that students wear black long pants, or skirt a white long sleeve button down shirt or blouse that will be tucked in, and black shoes.
Grading
Fifty percent of a student’s grade is based on behavior, attitude and participation in class. Fifty percent of their grade is based on work they do outside of class. Assignments for homework include documented practice time, written reports on composers and performers, written music theory assignments, musical or concert reviews, directed composition projects, music careers research projects, or solo and small ensemble performance projects . There are points available for playing in extra curricular ensembes, serving as a Band Officer or other service to the “musical community”. There are 900 points per term available for behavior and participation in class and 900 points available for work that is done outside of class. The final grade is calculated as an average of the two scores described above. This gives students the freedom
to plan their homework around their individual schedules, but adds the responsibility of making sure that they have the points that they need for the grade that they want to earn by the time the term ends. The grading rubric is as follows:

Grading for Windsor Middle School Bands

Daily points available per quarter: 900
Daily points available per day: 20
Other points available per quarter: 900
Your grade will be based on the “Average” of your “Daily points” and Your “Other Points”
810 - 900 = A
720 - 809 = B
630 - 719 = C
540 - 629 = D
below 540 ---- does not earn a passing grade
Ways to earn points:
• Practice – 1 hour – 100 points.
• Playing tests – 50 – 100 points depending on difficulty.
• Research papers on Composers or Performers – 50 – 250 points depending on quality
• Performance Review – 50 – 250 points depending on quality
• Composition projects – 50 – 250 points depending on quality
• Music Theory worksheets - 50 points per sheet (4 available per term)
• Music Careers research projects -50 – 250 points depending on quality
• Band Officer – 500 points (President, Librarian, Treasurer, Sound Tech)
• JB or EC ensembles – 50 points per session – 250 pts. per performance
• Fill an Instrument vacancy (low brass/low winds) – 500 – 750 points
• Numerous other incentives that make it easy for you to get the "A" such as "signing bonuses", "character bonuses".
Instruments
Windsor Middle School has been fortunate to be able to loan instruments to students over the last few years. As our program grows, though, it has become increasingly difficult to provide instruments for Honor Band students while continuing to supply our Beginning groups with adequate numbers of instruments to play. It is sometimes possible to buy used instruments at very reasonable rates. I frequently buy used instruments off of Craigslist to add to the WMS instrument inventory. In addition, there are reputable dealers who offer good quality refurbished instruments at reasonable rates. Please be careful about buying poor quality new instruments that are often available at Costco, Sears or online. If the price seems to good to be true, then the instrument is probably not worth the money you are going to pay for it. (These cheap instruments have come to be called “Instrument Shaped Objects” by music teachers. I often ask the repair techs at Stanroy for advice about instrument quality because there are so many instruments out there with so many different names.) If you have any interest in buying a new or used instrument for your child to use, please let me know. I can give you more information and suggestions about how to go about it. Also, if you or anyone you know has an instrument they would like to donate to our program, we are always happy to give generous tax deductible donation letters.
Books
This year we will be using Book II and Book III of the Standard of Excellence series. Each student will need a copy of each book for the instrument that they play. Please check the cabinet for copies of books that have been left behind before ordering books for the year. As always, I will be happy to order books for those students who need them.
Thanks again for encouraging your child to play music and thank you for supporting music at Windsor Middle School! We want as many of our 8th graders as possible to attend. Why? Because participating in the Jump Start REALLY improves the quality of the players who are able to attend, and, thereby, really improves the quality of our groups when we get back. The added benefit is that IT'S REALLY FUN!!! It's a fantastic way to attend a world class performing arts camp for a pittance. As always, scholarships are available for those students who need them. (Please let me know. We can make this happen!) We are also looking for a few good chaperones. Unlike Science Camp, being a chaperone at Caz is relaxing, and rewarding! As you know, our Spring Concert is on Thursday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the WMS Gym. Performers will need to be here by 6:00 p.m. in concert attire: black pants or skirt, a white shirt and black shoes. Honor Band students will meet in the Multi Purpose Room to warm up and tune, then wait in the library for their portion of the Concert. Beginning Band students will meet in F101 to warm up and tune for their portion of the concert. After the Beginning Band performs, they will return to their bleacher seats in the gym for the Honor Band’s performance. Our goal is to keep students from running around outside and disrupting the rest of the performance. Parents are encouraged to stay for the entire performance which will be about one hour long. There will be a silent auction for some wonderful items. Please see the back of this letter if you are interested in helping us on Tuesday. Your support and generosity is always appreciated! We look forward to performing for you.
Sincerely
Steve Mitchell

Celebrate The Arts

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fMrLNA1vZko/TeaKK8K-_dI/AAAAAAAAAGE/TCL8VzOmsFQ/s320/marineworld.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5613325906119425490" />
5/11/11
Dear Students and Parents
We are very excited about the upcoming performance at Marine World's Discovery Kingdom for their "Celebrate the Arts" program. The bus will leave Windsor Middle School at 8:30 a.m. We ask that students arrive no later than 8:15 a.m. to load the bus and get ready. The bus will arrive at Marine World by 10:00 a.m. For those of you traveling to Marine World on your own, will meet at the front gates at 10:15 to distribute tickets. Once in the park, please meet us at the Oasis Theatre (near Kong and Medusa) at 10:45 with the student performer, and their instrument and music. For our performance, we ask that students wear some piece of WMS clothing such as a Spartan Stampede shirt, a PE shirt, a WMS sweatshirt, a jersey from a WMS sports team etc. After the performance, they are free to wear anything that conforms to the WMS dress code. Our performance at 11:00 will last for a half an hour at most. After that, I would again be grateful to any students or parents who could help us get our gear packed up and put away. The bus will leave Marine World at 7:00 p.m. Students are free to enjoy the park in groups of three or more students, after we play. I ask that students check in with me at least twice after we play. I will be at the tables next to the food pavilion (in front of the lake) and available at all times by phone.
Because this is a Windsor Middle School field trip, all students will need to have a signed permission slip regardless of whether or not they ride the bus or travel in their parent's car. Also, because of District regulations and fingerprinting requirements, we cannot allow students to ride home with other families unless the appropriate permission slips and arrangements have been made in advance. Thank you for your understanding, and thanks for being part of our performance at Discovery Kingdom!
Thanks again for being part of the Windsor Middle School Bands.
Sincerely
Steve Mitchell

Windsor Parade

5/5/11
Dear Parents

Thank you very much for encouraging your child in music! I want to give you some final details about Saturday's performance at the G&C Auto Body Grand Opening. Students should arrive at G&C (10661 Old Redwood Highway, across from Garrett's Hardware) at 11:30 in concert attire. The students will be given a brief tour of the facility and a snack before our first performance at 12:00 noon. A catered BBQ will be served after the performance. We've been asked to play a second time after we eat. I don't have an exact time line for the rest of event - I think they have purposely tried to build some flexibility into their schedule. The Grand Opening is over at 3:00, but I suspect we will be done before that. I'm sorry I can't be more specific at this point. Parents are welcome to attend the Grand Opening, of course.
I really appreciate the overwhelming responses offering to help us transport gear. At this point, I think we have enough people and vehicles arranged to get our equipment there. Students have been instructed to take their own instrument with the exception of the percussionists and tuba players. We will be meeting here at WMS at 10:30 to load our gear, in the event that your child has forgotten their instrument or music. Otherwise, we will see you at G&C at 11:30.
I've really tried to stress the importance of outstanding and mature behavior to the students at this very public event. Anything that you can do to reinforce that message is appreciated.
As always, feel free to write or call with questions, and thanks for encouraging your child to be part of our group.
Sincerely
Steve Mitchell

G&C Auto Body Grand Opening!!

11/28/10

Dear Parents
The students and I are very excited about the upcoming performances. As you know, our Winter Concert is on December 9th, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. and the G&C Auto Body Windsor Grand Opening is on December 11th at 12:00. As you may recall from the course syllabus, the Winter Concert is a "curricular" event and considered part of the student's grade. The G&C event is "extracurricular" and totally optional. Because the G&C event is a public performance, though, we do want to represent the Windsor Middle School Band program favorably and we are grateful to any Honor Band students who can participate. 250 bonus points will be awarded to those who can make the event, and there will be food available for the participants. Of course, G&C will be making a very generous donation to our program, too! In order to get an accurate count for the G&C event so that we can make sure that there are enough chairs and stands, please RSVP using the form below. I would also be grateful to any parent who could help transport equipment to the event. If you can help, please call or write. Thanks for supporting music at Windsor Middle School! There will be a 50 pt. bonus for all students who can bring this form back by December 1st, regardless of their ability to attend the event.
Sincerely
Steve Mitchell

My child _________________________

________ will attend the G&C event on 12/11/10.

_______ will not attend the G&C event on 12/11/10

_______ I can help transport equipment on 12/11/10

San Francisco Symphony Trip

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 268px; height: 188px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MLiIGzI86SM/TNRag3t9yZI/AAAAAAAAAFc/cOKQZ8xd4Hw/s320/sfsymph.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5536149362704238994" />

Our Windsor Middle School honor bands had a lot of fun at the San Francisco Symphony! Being at the symphony building was an experience in its own. Afterward, we drove to a park in Marin. We had enough time to eat lunch and hang out with our friends. Even with the super long bus rides, we had a lot of fun at this San Francisco Symphony! We had a wonderful trip to the San Francisco Symphony's Concerts for Kids yesterday. I've seen them play many times and the quality of the music they produce always amazes me! I'm so glad that your children have had the chance to see them in person.
I'm writing to give you more information about some upcoming activities. You may remember from our newsletter that the G&C Auto Body Grand Opening had been tentatively scheduled for November 13. The event has been rescheduled to December 11. Peter Bizaca, G&C's Director of Public Relations and Sales visited and personally invited the students to come and play. As he explained, G&C Auto Body is opening a new facility in Windsor and they really want to connect with the community. Other invitees include the mayor, town council, and the press. It is an honor to be invited to perform. The event begins at 12:00 noon and lasts until 3:00. Clearly, the students will not be playing for the entire time. Any students who are able to be there will be given a bonus towards their grades; there is no penalty, of course, for those who cannot attend. G&C has also offered to make a very generous donation to our program.
As you know, our Winter Concert is on December 9th at 6:30. Stay tuned for more information. We look forward to performing for you.

Analy Fall Festival Details

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 232px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MLiIGzI86SM/TL4h-Xj_EHI/AAAAAAAAAFU/w2gm79QEbvw/s320/wmsband%40aff09.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529894747818102898" />

The Honor Band students were very happy with the performance at the Analy Fall Festival! We are glad to announce that the behavior was superb. The three songs we performed were played well, and the judges were pleased. After the performance, Dr. Royce Tevis gave the students an outstanding clinic. He spent a great deal of time working on breath control, and showing the students that they could play much longer phrases than they had been playing by learning to control their air. Dr. Tevis also talked about balance and blend. He explained that a band's sound should be like a "Triangle of Music", with bass at the bottom being the loudest, the mid range instruments like trumpets and low clarinets the next loudest and the high woodwinds the softest. Dr. Tevis is the Director of Bands at Cal State University at Chico and has spent many years directing amazing bands.

All students who attended the concert has received a 350 point bonus. This is over 30% of your grade! From a student's point of view, this was awfully easy. The students really enjoyed the fun, and the funny picture, after the "boring" formal picture. (If you bought pictures, they will be delivered very soon.)

Thanks for making WMS look good!

Caz Rocks!!!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MLiIGzI86SM/TK406dlADRI/AAAAAAAAAFE/rIBpEb5PVRA/s320/Caz+10.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5525411971807055122" />

What an outstanding weekend at the spectacular Cazadero Performing Arts Camp!! Our 25 WMS Honor Band students and 5 chaperones, joined 100 other middle school musicians and high school mentors for the 9th Annual Sonoma Jump Start. The students and I enjoyed the beautiful weather, the towering redwood trees, waking up to "Reveille" and going to sleep to "Taps", and the wonderful sounds of music echoing through the Cazadero canyon. We slept under the stars, ate s'mores by the campfire, played capture the flag and tug of war and spent many hours rehearsing for Sunday afternoon's concert. We were honored that Cazadero founder Robert Lutt attended our performance. Many thanks and congratulations to Anthony Amari, Joey Carroll, Chase Courier, Kevin Cummings, Chapman Dundas, Allie Feland, Danyel Fong, Kristina Hamilton, Megan Hopper, Rachel Ibrahim, Kevin Jackson, Will Kelly, Ruth McQuown, Sebastian Miller, Jeremy Nelson, Connor Post, Brandon Potts, Derrick Ramos, Sean Scheiner, Tori Sheber, Cameron Skaggs, Evan Smith, Natalie Smith, Kylie Stephens, and Erich Woermann. We're especially grateful to our 5 chaperones: Rick Cummings, Sandy Hamilton, Mona Ibrahim, Mike Skaggs, and Jeanne Sheber. The students came away from the weekend with many new friends and greatly increased skills on their instruments. Great job everyone!!

Calendar

Here are a list of the dates that we have on the calendar for the 2010/2011 school year:
Winter Concert 12/9/10
Windsor Day Parade 5/7/11
Spring Concert 5/19/11

Community

Band classes are different from other classes.

In the past, we have participated in the Music in the Parks Festivals consisting of a morning performance at a school in Vacaville, and an awards ceremony and afternoon in the park. Over the years, many students and parents have asked why we couldn't play in the park itself. This year we were fortunate enough to secure one of the coveted performance times in Discovery Kingdom's "Celebrate the Arts" Program. We will be performing in the Oasis Theatre at 12:00 on May 15! All WMS Honor Band students are invited to attend. We are absolutely delighted because this "in park" performance opportunity will actually be substantially cheaper than the participation in the Music in the Parks Festival. The cost of the trip will be $40 - $45: $24 for the Marine World ticket and $16 - $21 for bus transportation. (We will be able to determine the exact cost when we have an accurate count of attendees.) The cost of the Music in the Parks trip would have been $70 per student! We are also happy to purchase additional tickets for family members at the reduced rate, but will need to reserve bus space for our performers. We are so grateful that we are able to provide this enhanced performance opportunity at a far better price. In addition, we will have opportunities for students to earn their ticket and transportation by selling Otter Pops after school.
In order to secure the tickets and bus transportation for the "Celebrate the Arts" program, we need to get an accurate count of attendees. Please fill out the form attached to this letter and return it no later than March 26th. Parents, please consider joining us as a chaperone. The performance by the middle school and high school groups was stunning! As you may know, there are many benefits to learning to play a musical instrument and the skills that your child will gain will help them in all other areas of the curriculum, and in life.

We have come to the point in our first year of Band where students can apply and audition for one of the percussion positions in our group. Candidates for percussion should be among the finest musicians in our group. They should be excellent players on their first instrument (able to easily play all of our current material), have a solid grasp of reading notes and rhythms, have a strong work ethic, have excellent grades in Band and other classes, and most importantly, have outstanding classroom behavior and an excellent attitude. In many ways, being a percussionist is more difficult than playing any of the other instruments. Our percussionists will learn to play snare drum, bass drum, bells, and many auxiliary percussion instruments. Students selected to be percussionists in our groups must practice EVERY DAY. I also ask that our percussionists maintain a minimum of a 2.5 GPA to remain one of our percussion students. If your child is selected, he or she will need a pair of drum sticks, a practice pad (10 or 12 inch head), and STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE BOOK I for Percussion. These items should be available at Stanroy Music (545-4827), or from musiciansfriend.com (practice pad) and jwpepper.com (books).
Please discuss these issues with your child to make sure that they have an understanding of the responsibilities of being selected as one of our percussionists. Students who wish to try out will need to bring the permission slip/application which appears on the back of this page. The auditions will consist of a written test on notes and rhythms, a playing test on their primary instrument and a rhythm sight reading test. Depending on the number of applicants that pass the audition, students may continue to play on their original instrument as well as percussion.
Please do not hesitate to call or write with any questions, suggestions, or concerns.
I can be reached at 837-7737 ext. 134 or by e-mail: smitchell@wusd.org. Many thanks!
Sincerely,

Steve Mitchell
Windsor Middle School Band Director

Student Name:

Current GPA:

Grade:

In your own words tell me why you would make an excellent percussionist:

I, ____________________________, understand that I will have to practice every day if I am selected as a percussionist. I agree that I will learn to play snare drum, bass drum, bells, and many different auxiliary percussion instruments. I promise to have excellent behavior in class and will also maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 during the 2nd semester of this school year. The students and I are very excited about the upcoming Winter Concert on December 9, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. in the Windsor Middle School Gym. I am writing to let you know some details about the upcoming activities and to ask for your help.

The logistics of the evening are as follows: Beginning Band students will meet in Room K116 at 6:00 p.m. in concert attire: black long pants or skirts a white button down shirt and black shoes. Beginning band members will not take out their instruments until I am in the room. Beginning band students will have reserved seats in the bleachers closest to the performance area. We’re glad that they will be able to enjoy the second half of the concert. Honor Band students will meet in the MPR at 5:45 p.m. We will warm up and tune quickly. Instruments will then be put away and the Honor Band will go to the library to relax and quietly enjoy the computers and books while the Beginning Band performs. I’m grateful to all parents who are able to help supervise the groups as they prepare for the performance.

After the concert, we will need a crew of parents and students to clean up the gym, stack the chairs, move the instruments back to the band room, take down the decorations and get the gym ready for classes the next day. The concert will be about an hour long. If enough people are able to help with the clean up, it will not take too long or keep us out too late.

Attached is a list of Concert Etiquette rules that it is very important for our students to know. Please discuss these with your child. Please indicate that you have read the letter by signing below. (A 50 pt. bonus will be awarded for returning the letter by Friday, December 5!)

Thank you very much for encouraging your child to play in our bands and for supporting music in the Windsor Schools. Studying music is good for them and good for our school! We look forward to performing for you.

Sincerely

Steve Mitchell

_______________________________ _____________________________________________
Parent Signature Parent Name

I can help out by

__________ Serving on the clean up crew

__________ Helping to supervise students at the Concert

__________ Helping to decorate the gym for the Concert ______________________________
phone/email

Here are the Top Ten rules on Concert Etiquette:

1. Refrain from talking during the performance and remind your children that it is important for them to be quiet before and during the performance. If students see their parents talking during a performance they will assume this is appropriate behavior. The students have worked hard to prepare for the performance. They deserve our respectful behavior.

2. Refrain from making extraneous noise during the concert and encourage your child to do the same. A parents calm demeanor will help the children to be calm and quiet. Our goal is to create an atmosphere more like a symphony concert than a rock or pop concert.

3. Turn off cell phones, pagers, pda’s, and watches during the concert.

4. Do not wave to your child while they are on stage. Your sense of decorum will be imitated by the students on stage.

5. Do not take flash photographs or walk down the aisle to shoot video of your child while the students are playing.

6. Do not leave as soon as your child’s portion of the concert is over. Our concerts will be about one hour long. Show your child that you value their performances now, and will continue to do so in the future.

7. Applaud appropriately at the appropriate times.

8. Do not enter or leave the auditorium while a group is playing.

9. Go to the concert expecting the best from your kids both musically and behaviorally. Expectation can boost achievement!

10. Remember that children learn more from what we do, than what we say!!

WMS Bands Shine at Analy Fall Festival!!!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 232px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MLiIGzI86SM/SunlW8oIw3I/AAAAAAAAACY/y2gSxL7hwAk/s320/wmsband%40aff09.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398097810774606706" /> The Windsor Middle School Honor Band presented a stellar performance at the Analy Fall Festival on October 23, 2009. The group received many outstanding comments and advice from adjudicators Dr. Eric Hammer from the University of the Pacific, and Mr. Joe Perea from Santa Rosa Junior College. The clinic given by Mr. Perea was outstanding in every way. It's always amazing to hear how a few new ideas and ways of thinking about music can transform the way the group can sound. Many thanks to all of the students for an exceptional job on stage and in the clinic room. We are also grateful to the many parents who helped to supervise our group as we walked from Ives Park to Analy, and before and after our performance. Thanks to Sebastopol Tractor Company for letting us store our instruments there when we had lunch! It was especially exciting to read about the festival and see the many pictures in the Press Democrat. Great job everyone! WMS is proud of you!!

Analy Fall Festival for WMS Honor Bands

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MLiIGzI86SM/StZTzp-E9uI/AAAAAAAAACQ/GPEg0Aycdpg/s320/AFF+photo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392589750727407330" />
10/14/09
Dear Parents
The WMS Strings Ensemble and Honor Band are very excited about our upcoming performances at the Analy Fall Festival on Friday, October 23. Because of our early arrival at Analy, we will walk to Ives Park to enjoy a leisurely lunch. Thanks, in advance, to any parent who can volunteer to help us manage this large group of middle school students as we wait for our performance times. Please use the form below if you are able to join us.
Thanks, also, for insuring that your child attends this most important and educational co-curricular event. The clinics given by outstanding college level adjudicators are one of the highlights of the year. Due to the generosity of the Savannah Hill Foundation, WalMart, WMS Boosters and Caz we were able to make sure that all students who wanted to were able to enjoy the magic of the Sonoma Jump Start!! The Sonoma Jump Start takes place on September 24 - 26th and it is a truly wonderful experience for all concerned, especially parents! Chaperoning at CAZ is NOTHING like being a chaperone for the 6th grade Science Camp. Parent responsibilities are minimal in comparison. Also, opposite gender chaperones are welcome. In fact, we already have a father of a girl who has volunteered. In many ways, this may be easier, since the bulk of the chaperone responsibilities occur on the decks where the students sleep. Any mothers of boys out there who are willing to go??? Obviously, female chaperones stay with the girls, and male chaperones stay with the boys......

Welcome to the 2009/2010 School Year!!!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MLiIGzI86SM/SpQzjWN8CXI/AAAAAAAAAAM/yoJYR9gU_eM/s320/AFF+photo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373976937712322930" />
Dear Students, Parents, Families and Friends of the Windsor Middle School Bands -- Welcome Back to another exciting year of music, and fun for the Windsor Middle School Bands!! Half of your grade is based on work you do outside of class (Other Points).
Your grade will be based on the “Average” of your “Daily points” and Your “Other Points”

810 - 900 = A
720 - 809 = B
630 - 719 = C
540 - 629 = D
below 540 ---- does not earn a passing grade

Ways to earn "Other" points:
• Practice – 1 hour – 100 points.
• Playing tests – 50 – 100 points depending on difficulty.
• Research papers on Composers or Performers – 100 – 250 points depending on quality
• Performance Review – 50 – 250 points depending on quality
• Composition projects – 50 – 250 points depending on quality
• Music Theory worksheets - 50 points per sheet (4 available per term)
• Music Careers research projects - 50 – 250 points depending on quality
• Band Officer – 500 points (President, Librarian, Treasurer, Sound Tech)
• Jazz Band or EC ensembles – 50 points per session – 250 pts. per performance
• Fill an Instrument vacancy (low brass/low winds) – 500 points
(The points awarded for filling instrument vacancies will be negotiable.
We clearly have a need for some instruments more than others.)

If you have less than “540 points” in the “Total Other” Category on the last day when the grading period is over, points are added to your “Total Other” score to bring it up to 539.

Back To School Info

Windsor Middle School Bands
Program Overview

Personal Responsibility – Responsibility to the Group
1. Assets vs. Liabilities – Students are often reminded that their behavior, attitude, and ability (effort expended) are either an asset or a liability to our group. Our tolerance for “liabilities” (particularly with regard to behavior and attitude) will be very limited.
2. Grading – Your child DOES have homework in Band. All work is due by the last day of every grading period. They choose the things they will complete to get the grade that they want. See the Grading Section.
3. Instrument/Music/Paperwork – I consider it the student’s responsibility to have the things that they need to participate in class. They need their instrument, their music and book, and a pencil every day in class. Practice charts, worksheets and other important papers are kept at the front of the room. If they are absent on the day that something is passed out, it is their responsibility to get a copy.
4. Performances – The Winter and Spring Concerts are “curricular” in that an unexcused absence will result in a demotion of one letter grade of the earned grade for that grading period. Other performances are “co-curricular”, with appropriate bonuses and penalties.
5. Classroom Management – Modified Assertive Discipline Model with a clearly defined set of rules and consequences. Primary consequence is “Campus Beautification”.

Rules

Band Room Rules
Safety

• I will TOUCH only MY instrument.
• I will be SAFE at all times.
• I will enter and exit the room QUIETLY.

Responsibility

• I will CLEAN up after myself.
• I will recognize MY RESPONSIBILITIES to the other members of the group.
• I will be in my seat and ready to play 3 MINUTES after the period begins.

Respect

• I will stay ON TASK WITHOUT DISTURBING OR DISTRACTING others.
• I will NOT USE INSULTS OR HARASS others.
• I will RESPECT other people’s DIFFERENCES and opinions.
• I WILL RESPECT THE RULES OF THE SCHOOL.

I, ______________________, understand the need for rules in Band class and agree to follow the rules that are listed here.

You are a member of our team, and every other member of the team is relying on you to be there and to do your best every time we are together.

Please see the “Rules” sheet for specific rules and consequences. Parents can help by supporting our efforts to maintain high standards for behavior and performance.

Calendar
Here are the important dates for 2009/2010:

Sonoma Jump Start 9/25 - 9/27/09

Analy Fall Festival 10/23 or 10/24/09

TOW Tree Lighting 12/3/09

Winter Concert 12/16/09

SCMS Honor Band 1/22 - 1/23/10

District Concert 2/25/10

CMEA Festival 5/7 – 5/8/10

SF Symphony Trip TBA

Discovery Kingdom Trip TBA

Spring Concert 5/18/10

It is my hope that with this advance notice you will be able to keep these dates in mind as you plan your other activities. The Winter and Spring Concerts and the Fall Festival are considered part of the student’s grade. Unexcused absences to the Concerts will cause a student’s final grade to be reduced by one letter grade. Failure to attend the Fall Festival will result in a 250 pt. fine. Bonus points will be awarded for attendance at our important cocurricular events that take place outside of school hours. It is important to remember that our ensembles are communities in which every person contributes to the work that we produce together.

Performance Attire
We ask that students wear black long pants, or skirt a white long sleeve button down shirt or blouse, and black shoes.
The grading rubric is as follows:
Grading for Windsor Middle School Bands

Daily points available per quarter: 900
Daily points available per day: 20
Other points available per quarter: 900

Your grade will be based on the “Average” of your “Daily points” and Your “Other Points”

810 - 900 = A
720 - 809 = B
630 - 719 = C
540 - 629 = D
below 540 ---- does not earn a passing grade

Ways to earn points:
• Practice – 1 hour – 100 points.
• Playing tests – 50 – 100 points depending on difficulty.
• Research papers on Composers or Performers – 100 – 250 points depending
on quality
• Performance Review – 50 – 250 points depending on quality
• Composition projects – 50 – 250 points depending on quality
• Music Theory worksheets - 50 points per sheet (4 available per term)
• Music Careers research projects -50 – 250 points depending on quality
• Band Officer – 500 points (President, Librarian, Treasurer, Sound Tech)
• JB or EC ensembles – 50 points per session – 250 pts. per performance
• Fill an Instrument vacancy (low brass/low winds) – 500 – 750 points
(The points awarded for filling instrument vacancies will be negotiable.
We clearly have a need for some instruments more than others.)

If you have less than “540 points” in the “Total Other” Category on the last day when the grading period is over, 539 points is added to your “Total Other” score. This will bring your average up. If you have more than “900 points” in the “Total Other” Category, your “average” is calculated based on 900 points and not your actual total. This keeps well behaved students who have not done enough work outside of class from failing, and poorly behaved students who get a large number of “Other” points from automatically earning a good grade.

As always, I will be happy to order books for those students who need them.

Thanks again for encouraging your child to play music and thank you for supporting music at Windsor Middle School! As always, you can reach me at 837-7737 ext 134. It is often easiest for me to communicate via e-mail: smitchell@wusd.org. If you prefer to communciate via e-mail please send me a message so that I have your address in my address book.
Calendar
Here are a list of the dates that we have on the calendar for the 2009/2010 school year:

Winter Concert December 16 2009
Windsor Day Parade May 1, 2010
Spring Concert May 18, 2010

It is my hope that with this advance notice you will be able to keep these dates in mind as you plan your other activities. The Winter and Spring Concerts are considered part of the student’s grade. Unexcused absences to the Concerts will cause a student’s final grade to be reduced by one letter grade. Failure to attend the Windsor Parade will result in a 250 pt. fine, but extra credit work will be available for any student who is uanable to attend.
Performance Attire
We ask that students wear black long pants, or skirts a white long sleeve button down shirt, or blouse and black shoes.
Grading
Fifty percent of a student’s grade will be based behavior and participation in class and fifty percent of their grade is based on work they do outside of class.

• Research papers on Composers or Performers – 50
– 250 points depending on quality

Practice
I ask that students practice for at least 20 minutes per day. 2 hours of practice time per week will give a student the 900 points required for an “A” in the “homework” portion of our grading system.
